Fruity Loops – Ramsay Lohan On A Self Discovery

First up on the blog for Monday we catch up with Ramsay Lohan. Ramsay appeared at moofest 2015 and this year takes to the Sunbird Records stage for what we believe is one of his first performances of 2016.

Who are you?

Hey, it’s nice to be at moofest again this year! I’m Ramsay Lohan, a solo electronic singer / songwriter from the hilly town of Darwen and i’ve been doing my thing for a while now,
perhaps a year and a bit and i’m going to try and answer these questions for you the best i can!

What inspired you to make music?

In the beginning I was inspired by making the hardest bassiest trap music i could with vocals on top of it to tie it all together and received some minor success with it including a few radio plays and interviews, a few gigs and playing the mainstage at Darwen Live last year.

However after august last year I went on a hiatus because i felt like my music was not reaching the impact that I meant it to reach so i went on a journey of self discovery to try and define what i want and then create it with what i have. So i came up with something a lot lighter, more artistic and interesting using loops, voice and pop elements similar to maybe SBTRKT, Kimbra and Gotye I was planning to test what i had in mind at this year’s Darwen Live but unfortunately the venue i was going to play for ran into troubles and couldn’t open at all over the weekend so i guess you’ll see the new ramsay lohan at moofest this year.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

So this morning i had crunchy nut, but you know, with the chocolate bits in

What’s your favourite breakfast cereal?

My favourite cereal is Fruit Loops!

What’s the worst job you ever had?

The worst job i’ve had, i’ve done a lot of sound engineer work over the years and seen a lot of weird stuff but overall i think the worst job i’ve had was when i was in school i went and worked for the bee radio station and i was mega excited to do some production or work underneath the radio hosts or something like that but they ended up making me sit in a room for a week and do all the paper work they didn’t want to do, which pretty much consisted of matching songs to track ID’s and it was the most mind numbing, insanely boring thing i’ve ever had to do ever. Normally it’s quite simple to make something fun if you’re creative about it but there’s nothing creative about paperwork, for my mind it was torture (Sorry Paper Pushers! =( )

What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

If i was invisible for one day? If i could chose the day, i’d travel to america then sneak into area 51 and see what stuff they got going on in there, you know like see if the men in black are real or not and stuff. If i couldnt then i guess i’d probably just mess with people. Like sneak into people’s houses and move stuff around just ever so slightly like make portraits and pictures slightly slanted, that sort of stuff really, i’d just like to see the world burn. Maybe i would take some time out to inspire someone somehow. Maybe tell a kid i’m a ghost from the future and tell them that if they work hard then they can do anything they want. That would probably offset all the picture slanting.

What’s your favourite ride at the fair?

My favourite ride at the fair, has to be whatever is the most extreme, stomach churning thing they got.

Have you ever milked a cow?

I have milked a cow actually

What’s your favourite cheese?

My favourite cheese has to me pepperjack cheese

What’s your favourite sandwich?

My favourite sandwich has got to be any breakfast sandwich. Breakfast is the best tbf.

Did you have a nickname at school?

I unfortunately cannot say my school nickname without upsetting anyone as unfortunately going to a school mostly consisting of rich white people, they come up with very shallow racially driven nicknames for someone who isn’t as white and rich as them.

Have you ever written a fan letter?

I’ve never written a fan letter! Does that make me a bad fan of music? Maybe.

What’s your most disgusting habit?

My worst habbit? Probably when im sat at my computer i just let stuff gather round me like cans and plates way too high. I’m just way too obsessed with what im working on.

If you were a domestic appliance what would it be?

If i was an appliance, i’d be a coffee maker, because i know i’m gonna get your heart racing 😉

What’s your favourite word?

My favourite word would have to be Solipsism, not only because of the way it sounds phonetically, but it’s the theory that the only thing you can prove that exists is yourself. You know the whole, “I think, therefore I am” thing by Descartes.

Can you think of a good poem about moofest?

A good poem for moofest? How about a haiku?

Moofest is super cool
Moofest is the most fun ever
You’ll remember it forever

Tell us a joke?

The best joke i think of? I heard this one the other day;
A married couple down on their luck decides to make a few extra bucks by reluctantly having the wife work the corner. After the first day the husband picks her up and asks “how did you do?”. She says, “I did pretty well, I made £200.50”. He asks, “What, who gave you 50 pence?” and she replies “all of them”.

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

My advice for anyone who wants to form a band? My advice would have to be that find a group of people that you get along with, but that you can also work with to produce a good end result. But you must establish boundaries, and must be willing to take criticism from each other then help better each other. You’ll find that if you have something like that you’ll be able to make something for yourselves if you work hard enough at it. I’ve been in enough bands to know that theres nothing worse than having this super awesome drummer but he doesn’t turn up to rehearsals because he, “Totally met a new bird this week and she’s super cool” and he wants to waste his time on that. I mean i got sick of organising people and relying on others in order to better myself so i went solo.
